I have a question for some Christians in this server

2021-01-02 17:30:15 UTC

I’m being confirmed as a Catholic in spring, and I’m currently working through this big book. I was told a month ago by someone on this server that Christians don’t see a need for a Pope. According to this book, Jesus appointed Peter as the leader of the church, the Catholic Church. I also read about some edits Catholics made to the Bible to fit their beliefs, is this one of the changes because if Jesus *really* appointed a pope, I don’t see a reason there shouldn’t be one. If Jesus did appoint a church leader, why shouldn’t there be one now?

2021-01-02 17:38:16 UTC

The Bible only gives two church leaders, the pastor (also called bishop or elder) or the deacon. A priest is not in context of a New Testament church, and monk, nun, cardinal, pope, etc. all do not occur in the Bible. If it is not in the Bible, it ought not be accepted for the church because the Bible is the sole authority for faith and practice in church. Thus, the pope is an unbiblical position. Regarding that specifically, there was no pope position until about the year 606. For the church in Rome, up until that point there were only bishops over it. The year 606, Emperor Phocas, the emperor of the Roman Empire, bestowed upon the Roman Bishop Boniface III the title of Papa, meaning the Pope, or supreme father, as in over all churches. It had not existed before then. In fact, the previous head of the Rome church, Gregory III (d. 604), had resisted that being made of him, and said, “If a bishop, whoever he be, is called a general bishop (that is, pope), the whole church decays.” He also said, “I candidly say that any one who calls himself a general bishop, or desires to be called such, is, in his exaltation, the forerunner of antichrist.” His words were prophetic! The pope has been called the antichrist by many, many groups through the centuries.

That’s very interesting, and makes me want to change my religion more

2021-01-02 17:40:45 UTC

As for Peter, that is a false claim from a false understanding of Matt. 16:18. It is an illegitimate claim, which Roman Catholicism does a lot of in its history (see Donations of Constantine for example). There is no one head over all churches in the world. The only head is the Lord Jesus Christ (Col. 1:18). And man that claims that is usurping that position from the Lord Jesus, which is blasphemy.

2021-01-02 17:41:36 UTC

I feel..lied to. Thanks

2021-01-02 17:41:38 UTC

I fully encourage you to do so. You are free to DM if you would like. I have studied Catholicism in comparison to the Bible many times over the years.

2021-01-02 17:43:15 UTC

I don’t feel that I can leave the Catholic Church months before my confirmation. My parents wouldn’t be too happy with me. However I might later

2021-01-02 17:44:31 UTC

Every person will answer for themselves before God--your parents won't be able to do so for you, only for themselves. You cannot allow them to control how your judgment before God will go, you need to do that for yourself.

2021-01-02 17:54:32 UTC

@Austinthegamerthebest so why would it be useful to me

2021-01-02 17:54:46 UTC

As I do not care about afterlife

2021-01-02 17:55:05 UTC

Well you wouldn't until you'd be cast into hell

2021-01-02 17:55:26 UTC

So if he is real it'd definitely be useful

2021-01-02 17:55:36 UTC

I only care about things that are usefull to me in life

2021-01-02 17:56:00 UTC

And the bible has something that is useful for me in life but beliving that it is real isnt usefull

2021-01-02 17:56:10 UTC

If God exists, then that’s great. If God doesn’t exist, then... well... guess something else has to exist.

2021-01-02 17:56:52 UTC

God is certainly the Supreme Judge of our world and, since he’s above us all, can have a clearer judgment than us, mortals.

2021-01-02 17:57:46 UTC

from a non-religous standpoint, I would argue that the greatest goal in life is happiness. not frivolity or repose, but true happiness, which is a fruit of labor and a good mental state. I choose to belive in god, if he exists, not because I fear hell, but because I fear the saddness that lack of purpose and nihlism create.

2021-01-02 17:57:47 UTC

Well he wants to know why God's useful if he's real correct?

2021-01-02 17:57:48 UTC

But my question is why should I belive in the christian God? Like I want someone to try and sell me their religion instead of trying to sell religion as a whole

2021-01-02 17:57:54 UTC

**And** the 10 Amendments are rules that should be respected by us all, because they have a reason for being there. They can’t just be said for no reason. God is a philosophical matter, by the way. He doesn’t have to physically exist in order for people to believe in it.

2021-01-02 17:58:24 UTC

Well a calm and enjoyable life would be it but that is just what you said with less words

2021-01-02 17:59:05 UTC

Well, our live can’t be truly amazing if we don’t have a purpose. If we don’t have a purpose, then we’re alienated. And God gives us a reason to live.

2021-01-02 17:59:08 UTC

Ok but why Elohim and not Allah or Jehovah?

2021-01-02 18:00:11 UTC

Again, you should know why. If you personally relate to the values that the religion is having, then you can believe in it.

2021-01-02 18:00:24 UTC

I personally I am not Christian, though my religeon states pretty everything in the bible is true. Christianity has a well defined and agreeable (mostly) doctrine that encourages a stoic and kind life.

2021-01-02 18:00:53 UTC

So if I relate to multiple things in different religions but with no entire religion then what do I do?

2021-01-02 18:01:06 UTC

I am Christian I believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and I believe the Bible

2021-01-02 18:01:23 UTC

There’s a belief that all religions lead to the truth. I forgot it, but it’s essentially that all religions may have the truth.

2021-01-02 18:01:49 UTC

I don't believe that at all

2021-01-02 18:01:49 UTC

The resurrection of Jesus isn't even the 6th most important thing about Jesus, there are far more important things about him

2021-01-02 18:02:21 UTC

Jesus Christ clearly existed. And, as many Christians put it, if you believe in Christ, you believe in God.

2021-01-02 18:02:24 UTC

Well the resurrection is important

2021-01-02 18:02:56 UTC

Well they have truth even if they arent real events
