The swirly party is supposed to have little locks that grab onto he spring basket to keep it from moving so it spins the gears. The little arms that lock the basket are broken off so the key just unwinds itself without going to the wheels.

I completely agree with you.
I know about all the "questionable choices" Disney has made. I refuse to watch any of the live action movies.
You have to admit that The Mandalorian is great though
