Second, if there is an actual public event with a space faring civilization, what with all the private enterprises getting involved in orbital travel, the DoD can still say, "we told you they were real."

The news was released when it was most likely to be ignored in favor of other things

Less questions are asked, less attention paid to the event

Less panic that might result in actual meeting with an advanced civilization that might be friendly, but very odd
