9mm used to be fair less effective, but due to advances in metallurgy and gunsmithing, it isn't as weak as it used to be.

It depends on what you're doing with it. 9mm has less recoil, so you're more likely to get more shots on target faster, but against a soft target, yeah .50 is gonna do more damage round for round.
