why can some stores/sellers return your money automatically if you paid with a debit card

and some sellers need your bank account number

does refunding a part of the money from a debit card payment cost them something?

I guess it has to do with the service they use.

This is why I prefer paypal, I dont have 2 weeks to wait for a return of 5 dollars into my bank account.
