During the time in Nauvoo, Ill. the church had many members that became Free Masons. The "magic undies" originated with that group, and it is part of why the church separated into different branches.

Mormonism is not so much dogmatic as it is a religion of praxis. Meaning that once a person has the basics, their path to G-d is largely between them and G-d. But the practices are more consistent.
