if it's a grounding issue, then anything from the usb port and down the line can be the cause. If you try the built in ports at the IO panel and have perfect results, then it could be your case's ports. If not, rip the item apart

hey has anyone here ever run into a "data-only" usb cable that doesn't charge your phone but allows you to tether without wasting your laptop's power

I've seen plenty of "charge-only" cables but rarely have seen data only
