I have personally known people in the Air Force stationed there. Not one several. I assure you they are not actors. My Uncle vacationed there and Sydney was just as we are shown.

It was winter at home. Summer there.

Now had you said it used to be underwater and another continent near there was above water. That might be believable. I am not at all sure you are not right that these prisoners were just killed or more likely sold into slavery.
