There was a singularity, the big bang, which in itself was during a time when the universe was in it's dense phase. Due to it being dense it started to form, or what is normally referred to as collapsing, which would have caused the whole universe to re-collapse into a black hole. Instead it did the opposite and started to expand the universe which did give birth, perse, to many things which does include planets, stars, and stuff of that sort. (Although unlike popular belief this wasn't right away and it took around 13.80 billion years to finish.) @jeremy The big bang summed up but this a very dumbed down version so I could fit everything into a smaller paragraph.
