Why does 60 degrees north latitude have world record fruits and vegetables and the equal distance south of the Equator have no plant life at all?

According to the globe models sun exposure for both the north and south should be equal...just at opposite times to each other. Temperature and the ability to grow fruits and vegetables should not be different.
