WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
Detectives with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Gang Task Force arrested three people and seized over $2 million worth of the deadly opioid fentanyl during a raid at a Wilmington home earlier this week.

"As far as we can tell this is one of the largest seizures in the state," said NHC Sheriff Ed McMahon.

Nearly 13 pounds of fentanyl with an estimated street value of over $2 million was found inside a home in the 1400 block of Kornegay Avenue in the Creekwood North community.

Marijuana, heroin, and drug paraphernalia were also found in the home.

According to sheriff's office officials, detectives received tips that heroin was being sold at the home

During the next several months, undercover detectives made several controlled purchases of heroin from the home and on Wednesday executed a search warrant at the residence.

Authorities said the mixture of fentanyl seized could produce hundreds of thousands of bags for sale.

"What we seem to be finding is the dealers are putting more of the fentanyl and less of the heroin and we believe that's one of the main reasons we're having people overdosing and dying on this stuff," McMahon said.

According to McMahon, fentanyl can be deadly in trace amounts.

"When you think about this poison - this fentanyl - one grain can kill you," McMahon explained. "Our detectives are having to gear up with all this safety equipment before we go in. Once they get in, if we find something - any kind of drugs that we think may be fentanyl - we stop, we have to get our CSI team to come in and we test that in a lab now under special conditions. So we do all that, it makes it that much more dangerous for our local law enforcement officers."

Three people were taken into custody during the raid.

The race issue is tiresome. Caucasians are a minority world wide. Peoples of all nations have histories that reveal periods slavery, prejudice, colonization and war. Some people refuse to look at this history and face the hard truth there. Time we recognize that citizens here are just Americans, and stop identifying with a racial background.

ALBANY, NY (WTEN/CNN) - While most young teens are worried about middle or high school, there's one girl who's celebrating getting her college diploma.

"I want to (get) my masters in environmental engineering," said D.J. Tillman who is 12. "I do want to take a couple gap months."

But D.J. already has an associates degree under her belt.

"School wasn't just as fun anymore. It wasn't as fast paced," D.J. said.

On Friday, she walked into the commencement at Excelsior College to get her bachelor degree.

D.J. is short for Dorothy Jean.

Her mother Jemelita Tillman said this girl from the south side of Chicago is beating all the odds.

"There are some great things coming out of the south side of Chicago and this, my baby, is one of the greatest of them all," Tillman said.

"With environmental engineering it's all about helping people, the environment, and that's just what I love to do," DJ said.

But D.J. and her mother don't feel like she's missing out on being a child.

"It's not I just lock myself away from the world and do school all day. I still have friends and we go to the park and go to movies," she said.

"She still plays with bubbles," her mother said. "My child still loves to go on the swing. So when the question comes up, is she nervous, is she going to miss stop for high school, she's not even in the high school mind."

D.J.'s planning to get her masters degree in environmental engineering. Her mother, she said she hopes D.J. joins the Space Force.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The U.S. Navy confirmed Friday that a Chinese spy ship has been detected off the islands.

The reason? They're eyeing RIMPAC, the world's largest international maritime exercise.

China was uninvited from this year's RIMPAC exercises because of the nation's militarization of contested islands in the South China Sea.

The country had participated in the last two RIMPAC, or Rim of the Pacific, exercises — in 2014 and 2016.

Lt. Tim Gorman, of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, said in a statement Friday that authorities are "monitoring a Chinese navy surveillance ship in the vicinity of Hawaii."

"We expect the ship will remain outside of U.S. territorial seas and not operate in a manner that disrupts the Rim of the Pacific exercise," Gorman said.

China's absence has been a major headline of this year's RIMPAC exercises.

At RIMPAC's opening ceremony, Navy Adm. John Aquilino said that China's actions in the South China Sea are "exactly contradictory" to the maritime exercises. This year, 25 nations are participating, bringing 47 surface ships, five submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel.

Aquilino said the U.S. will cooperate with China where it can and compete and confront with the nation where it must.

"This entire exercise is about nations cooperating for peace, stability, security, and a free and open Indo-Pacific region,” he said.

The FBI is trying to hunt down whoever sent a letter to First Baptist Dallas with white powder inside.

Police and Dallas Fire-Rescue responded to the church around 1 p.m. Friday. They say an employee opened the envelope in a private area.

Medics checked out the employee while Hazmat teams tested the substance. They found the powder was non-toxic. The employee is fine.
