Let me tell you about a hero, only 18 years old:
SPC John T. Netherton, of Bravo Battery was riding in the back seat for an 1103rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion Convoy Logistics Patrol (CLP)
The CLP was traveling in an urban area, with five to six story buildings on each side on the road when his Gun Truck was struck by a 4 array Steel and Copper Explosively Formed Penetrator
Severely wounding the Truck Commander, gunner, wounded the driver and causing the vehicle to catch fire. Though badly wounded himself, SPC Netherton instinctively grabbed the fire extinguisher
He began to suppress the fire in the area of the gunner. SPC Netherton then aided the gunner in egressing the vehicle despite his own traumatic injuries. He did this without regard for his own life
It was not until SPC Netherton’s injuries were fully evaluated that you see what an unbelievable feat he accomplished that night.
SPC Netherton sustained two broken knees, burns and cuts to his face, severe laceration to his left hand, and shrapnel to his forearm and back
PFC Florence said himself he would not be alive were it not for SPC Netherton. His actions saved the life of his gunner and are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service.
and reflect great credit upon himself, Bravo Battery 2-138th Field Artillery, 1103rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 15th Sustainment Brigade, and the United States Army.
