Scammers using photo of former councilman to catfish women
By most accounts, Alex Wan is a good-looking guy.
In fact, he might be so good-looking that dozens of men around the world want to be him — or at least have his face.

Images of the former Atlanta City Councilman and current executive director of Horizons Atlanta are popping up all over social media on the pages of men claiming to be him.

Like Kim Chan Sun. And Wilson B. Larry. And Kim Lee Alex. And the South Korean doctor. Or the Atlanta heart surgeon.
All, Wan said, appear to be using his image to attract Asian women.
“It is just awkward,” Wan said. “The fact that I am a gay man and they are using my picture to go get women.”
Many of the casual photos of Wan — at least the ones where he has not been Photoshopped performing surgery — were taken at Pride parades.
Wan’s image, in a sense, is being used to “catfish” people.
In the era of online dating and virtual courting, the term “catfishing” rose out of the 2010 documentary and subsequent MTV series “Catfish.”
It is used to describe when a person posts a fake social media profile — particularly photos — to make social and romantic connections.

In February, the Better Business Bureau reported that more than a million Americans have been victims of “romance scams,” and over the last three years, more than $1 billion has been scammed from lonely Americans and Canadians looking for love on the other side of a screen.
But why Wan?
“I guess it is something about my image that they think will attract women,” Wan said.

Wan isn’t clear how many people are using his image, or whether one person is using it multiple times on different profiles. Wan said his image has shown up on Facebook and WhatsApp.

OAKLAND (KRON) - Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf is responding to a deadly, double stabbing that took place Sunday night at MacArthur BART Station.
18-year-old Nia Wilson was killed in the attack. Her sister, 26-year-old Lahtifa Wilson, is in the hospital battling injuries.

The GoFundMe identifies the other victim as Wilson's sister. She is in the hospital in unknown condition.
With the suspect still at large, Schaaf wrote "Every parent who saw the father of Nia Wilson grieve for his daughter is heartbroken by this horrific act."

She went on to say that Oakland Police are assisting BART in "identifying and apprehending the person or people responsible for this attack."
Here is her full statement:
"The senseless and violent stabbing of two young women on a BART train platform last night has shaken our community. Every parent who saw the father of Nia Wilson grieve for his daughter is heartbroken by this horrific act.
BART is the lead agency that will conduct this investigation. OPD has been in constant contact with BART Police, is already providing support on this investigation, and has considerable resources available to further assist in identifying and apprehending the person or people responsible for this attack.
At this time, we know of no known motive for this crime. We all mourn in this moment and we will all work together to bring justice for Nia, her sister and their family. Please follow @SFBART on twitter for further updates."

A man is in custody after allegedly fatally shooting a man and wounding another person at a Mormon church in Nevada, police say.
The City of Fallon Police Department identified the suspected gunman as John K. O'Connor.
O'Connor was a member of the congregation at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on West Richards Street in Fallon and had attended church services prior to opening fire about 1 p.m. Sunday local time (4 p.m. ET), police said in a statement.
Maria Butina, the recently indicted Russian national accused of being an agent of Russia, told the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this year that Russian billionaire Konstantin Nikolaev had backed her financially, a source familiar with her testimony told CNN.
Butina made international headlines last week when the Justice Department announced her arrest and a grand jury formally approved charges of conspiracy and acting as a foreign agent. The federal case has added to a growing picture of undisclosed foreign attempts to lobby in the US and alleged Russian influence in the political system.
