Tommy is Free! His conviction for contempt of court in Leeds has been overturned. He has been released on bail with no conditions pending a re-trial of the Leeds case. He is coming home! Thank you to everyone who has supported Tommy. We will have an update from him as soon as he walks through the gate today!
The former English Defence League (EDL) leader Tommy Robinson has been freed on bail by the court of appeal after winning a challenge against a finding of contempt of court.
The lord chief justice, Lord Burnett, and two other judges in London quashed a finding of contempt made in May at Leeds crown court and ordered a fresh hearing of the allegation.
The judges had been urged to overturn contempt of court findings against Robinson, 35, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon.
At a hearing in July, his QC Jeremy Dein argued that procedural “deficiencies” had given rise to “prejudice”.
Dein also submitted that the sentence was “manifestly excessive” and that “insufficient” regard had been given to personal mitigation.
