D ie number of Britons who strive to German citizenship has risen sharply since the United Kingdom and Gibraltar European Union membership referendum vote is almost a year ago. A total of 760 applications for naturalization from Great Britain were received by the Federal Office of Administration in 2016. The year before there were only 63 applications, only 46 in 2014. This year, the interest is even greater: From January to May alone 833 applications were counted from the UK. This emerges from a statistic of the authority, about which the Frankfurt general week reports in its forthcoming issue.

The majority of the applicants - about 90 percent - relies on Article 116 paragraph 2 sentence 1 of the Basic Law. This allows the Germans and their descendants, who were expelled during the Nazi period for political, religious or racist reasons, to be re-naturalized. The naturalization of nationals of other EU countries, according to the Federal Administration Office "generally with the adoption of multiple nationality". That means: Brits who receive the German passport do not have to give up their British.
Hundreds of applications in Frankfurt and Hamburg alone
Not yet included in the figures of the Federal Administration Office is the number of Britons who already live in Germany and who submit their application for naturalization. There are no overall statistics on these, as these applications are registered at the registry offices of cities and municipalities. In sum, this number should be much higher. According to information from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Woche, 280 applications for the naturalization of British citizens were received in Hamburg last year alone. 206 of them were submitted after 23 June, the day of the referendum. In the current year, there were already 180 applications until mid-May. By comparison, in 2015, only 52 applications from British citizens were recorded in Hamburg.

Russian military aggression in recent years has flagrantly violated commitments enshrined in the Helsinki Final Act relating to refraining from the threat or use of force against other states; refraining from violating other states’ sovereignty, territorial integrity, or political independence; and respecting the right of every state to choose its own security alliances.
Witnesses will review Russia’s military activities in Europe, and how Moscow has consistently and deliberately undermined its OSCE and related arms control commitments. Witnesses will also explore if and how Russia could be coaxed back into compliance, and assess the OSCE as a vehicle to address the growing instability and unpredictability in the European security environment.
