This and other realistic return-on-investment studies have been done on these things - they aren't all they're cracked up to be.
Those who pine for wind and solar power are focused on just one half of the equation -- the half wherein the mills and panels GENERATE energy. There's much more to it than that. They have to be manufactured, transported, installed. Add to that the facts that a) sometimes there is no wind, and, b) its dark for 1/2 of every day and a case could be made that these things are not only less efficient they're actually worse for the environment than traditional fossil fueled sources.
