2020-07-18 03:06:01 UTC

2020-07-18 03:06:09 UTC

just got back from a show, dm'd you

2020-07-18 03:11:58 UTC

I want to discuss how psychology works. Any takers?

2020-07-18 03:15:06 UTC

They say that we are creatures of habit. So how does one decide to do something other than what is ingrained? And what if the decisions themselves are ingrained?

2020-07-18 03:15:55 UTC

Before people get into this are you trying to debate freewill?

2020-07-18 03:16:37 UTC

I'm just looking for whatever people think.

2020-07-18 03:18:07 UTC

Most rational people might have several thoughts on the matter whether they know the truth or not.

2020-07-18 03:18:34 UTC

What are your thoughts on the matter?

2020-07-18 03:18:47 UTC

do you think you can form habits?

2020-07-18 03:18:58 UTC

or decide your habits

2020-07-18 03:19:50 UTC

If I try, I can do something new for a while. It doesn't always stick though.

2020-07-18 03:20:44 UTC

Why do you think that is? I have the same issue, I think there is enough evidence to argue people can change their habits

2020-07-18 03:22:39 UTC

Umm, old dog new tricks. Something else is getting in the way that you already do. Also, you might get distracted by someone else who needs your time/energy. And you have to be mindful of what you are doing in order to decide differently.

2020-07-18 03:23:26 UTC

What about a reward system and delayed gratification?

2020-07-18 03:28:34 UTC

Your brain supplies dopamine when you find a solution that you have been seeking. You might "fall in love" with the idea. That might work. The carrot and stick reaction may be a programmed response (Pavlov). If you disregard the orders, you get a stick. Usually, if you disregard the stick, you get a bigger stick, then a bigger stick. So you're programmed to take the orders seriously. At least that's what I observed in the Navy.

2020-07-18 03:32:45 UTC

Delayed gratification is useful if you think about the reward constantly when the situation arises.

2020-07-18 03:34:35 UTC

Well how do you apply it to yourself?

2020-07-18 03:35:22 UTC

How do you generate a reward system that is effective in habit forming

2020-07-18 03:38:35 UTC

Myself. I brainwash myself. If you repeat the *truth* often enough. Really grind into your head that you can and how you can, plausibly. Usually works to think about your day, and then use a mantra to fall asleep. Not joking.

2020-07-18 03:40:44 UTC

Fight fire with fire, so to speak.
