On Zero Hedge article that public school teachers are paid too much: um no. I’m not a fan of teachers union for their corruption but I will say no one would teach anymore if they hadn’t lobbied for higher teacher salaries. I don’t know where they found a kindergarten teacher making $70,000 but that sure as hell is not the norm. In 1996 I started out at $22,000. Thirteen years earlier, in 1983 my brother started at $45,000 as a chemical engineer. You could argue his job is harder but he wouldn’t have lasted 5 minutes in the classroom. And I guarantee he didn’t pay $1000 or more a year of his own money for basic supplies needed for the job. When I left a public school to go to a charter school - also a public school but with no union, my salary dropped 40% and expected working hours increased 15 hours per week plus some saturdays. We did not have basic textbooks or materials to teach. Most teachers who don’t have a spouse work 2-3 jobs just to pay the bills. The new teachers were there out of obligation for 2 years under Teach for America then fled to the suburbs to make sometimes up to 50% more. Turnover rate was so high that in 5 years there were only two teachers left that were there when I got there. There’s plenty wrong with the teachers unions, but getting higher wages for teachers was one thing they did right.
