While most migrants remain determined to reach the United States’ southern border where they intend to request asylum, some have heeded warnings that danger awaits them and are heading home.

One migrant turning around is a Salvadoran man identified only as Raúl who has only traveled 250 kilometers from his home.

While on the road, Raúl received a call from his wife in El Salvador who told him that messages were circulating on WhatsApp chat groups — which were used to organize at least one caravan — saying that migrants are in danger of being killed as they travel through Mexico.

Criminal groups have long preyed on Central Americans transiting Mexico, forcing men into working for them and pushing women into prostitution. Those who refuse to cooperate run the risk of being killed.

Another potential danger awaits the migrants if they manage to cross Mexico and reach the United States.

U.S. President Trump said in a speech this week that migrants throwing rocks at U.S. forces will be treated as armed.

“They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back. We’ll consider — and I told them — consider it a rifle. When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico military and police, I say consider it a rifle.”

Raúl told the newspaper Milenio that in addition to the risks posed by traveling through Mexico, Trump’s threats had also influenced his decision to head home.

“It seems dangerous, people are saying that Trump is going to shoot us when we get to the border and I don’t want that, I want to work there, I don’t want to get shot,” he said.

The new trade deal is a goal for Mexico. The score: Mexico 1, Trump 0
The original agreement has been subjected to some minor changes to produce NAFTA 2.0

Mexicans have taken United States President Donald Trump to the cleaners on NAFTA, the newly agreed-to United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA. That is what the president calls it instead of NAFTA 2.0, which it is.

Certainly there was some tinkering but stipulating higher North American content in imported vehicles from Mexico and Canada helps those countries more than it helps the U.S. Higher North American content, from 62.5% to 75%, is not a big deal. Canada, for example, makes far more parts than exportable automobiles.

Providing Trump-insisted-upon manufacturing caps on parts and autos themselves means little when those caps are far above current or projected sales of those items to U.S. customers. No matter what the caps are, small cars like Nissan’s Versa and Sentra will still be 100%manufactured in Mexico because of costs, costs that are too high in the U.S.

In reality it means that more foreign companies, like Michelin, will build larger factories in Mexico to supply the market in which nascent Chinese car makers now producing a handful of cars in Mexico.

We don’t know yet what the details of the new agreement are but we know that the Trump demand that a five-year “sunset” provision be used in the “new” agreement was junked by Mexico and Canada and didn’t survive the negotiations.

No savvy business person or analyst can figure exactly what Trump had in mind when he demanded a five-year “sunset” provision because no business executive in his or her right mind would ever consider such an onerous provision. Why? Because it takes more than a year to build a factory, for example, sometimes two or three.

Business planning, therefore, has to cover long periods of time; using a five-year measuring period simply does not work in business, in manufacturing especially.

BMW’s largest factory in the world is not in Germany, it is in South Carolina. Does President Trump think that the planning, construction and employee training of that factory (plus full-blast manufacturing) could be done in a short five-year period?

The “Trump sunset provision” of an agreement with Mexico and Canada never stood a chance of being approved by anyone with a brain. So goal for Mexico and to a lesser extent Canada.

Mexico can thank President Trump for more new job creation as companies will flood into Mexico to build new facilities to build air bags, alternators, car radios and computer gear, windshields, windshield wipers, bumpers, etc., etc.

Most of Mexican-made or assembled goods that are exported are exported to the United States as is the case with food products; Canada too. So, no matter what claims the president made about NAFTA being the worst agreement in history the three countries’ trade amounted to over a trillion dollars in 2017.

Moreover, Mexico alone, with 124 million people, buys more from the U.S. than all of Europe (with 500 million people) and all of China (with over a billion people).

Any comments made by President Trump about Mexico ripping off the United States were untrue. How, for example, can a country one-third the size of the U.S. buy as much from the U.S. as the U.S. does from Mexico?

In the final analysis, Mexico wins, Trump and Canada tie. Nobel Prize winner and New York Times economics commentator Paul Krugman says, “My original prediction on Trump/NAFTA was that we would end up making some minor changes to the agreement, Trump would declare victory, and we’d move on. That’s what seems to have happened.”

That, Dr. Krugman, is being charitable.

Authorities turn up heat on migrants; caravan no. 1 says feds blocked bus travel plan
Migrants in second caravan are being arrested in Chiapas; the first continues its march toward Mexico City

Immigration officials and Federal Police detained and deported 160 members of the second migrant caravan yesterday because they entered Mexico illegally.

The Central American migrants were arrested while walking or hitching rides from Tapachula to Huixtla in the southern state of Chiapas.

Nine kilometers before the caravan reached the latter town, immigration officials and police blocked the migrants’ path with about 30 vehicles.

Some succeeded in outrunning the authorities while those detained were taken to a National Immigration Institute (INM) facility where they were put on buses and taken to the Tapachula airport.

There, they were placed aboard a Federal Police plane and flown to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The INM told the newspaper Milenio that more migrants traveling as part of the first and second caravans who entered Mexico without going through official immigration channels will be detained in the coming days.

ago that Central American migrants traveling to the United States via Mexico would be detained and deported if they entered the country illegally, but prior to yesterday’s detention authorities have made few attempts to stop migrants from traveling through the country.

Many members of both the first and second caravans entered Mexico by crossing the Suchiate river, which separates Guatemala from Chiapas, by wading, swimming or riding on rafts.

Members of the second caravan clashed with Federal Police at the border last Sunday.

The migrants threw rocks and used sticks against the police after toppling a metal barricade blocking their entry into Mexico on the border bridge.

A 26-year-old Honduran man died during the confrontation, allegedly after being shot in the head with a rubber bullet. But Mexican authorities denied that police fired at the victim.

United States President Trump seized on the clash at a rally in Florida yesterday, telling supporters that the migrants are “not angels.”

“You saw what happened two days ago with the Mexican military and the Mexican police. You saw what happened there, how tough the opposition is,” he said.

“We’re tougher than anybody. We’re tougher than any force. And we’re probably going to have to be unfortunately.”

Trump also floated the idea yesterday that as many as 15,000 troops could be sent to the United States’ southern border just days after the U.S. Department of Defense said that it would send around 5,200 active-duty troops there.
