Seems to me people still falsely believe Columbus discovered America. It was always on maps and the Vikings lived in America and Canada back then and long before then.

From schools of learning far away,
Wise teachers taught the world was flat,
And few would dare to question that,
Then it was found,
The earth was round.

Though not so sure it was Ice back then. 1500 Era maps show land and people down there.
