Dozens of bomb threats have been made across the county Thursday including in the Rochester area.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 13 bomb threats were made throughout Monroe County on Thursday between 1:12 p.m. and 4:44 p.m. There was an additional threat made in Ontario County.
All of the threats have been made by email saying there was a bomb located in the business that wasn't large enough to destroy the structure but big enough to hurt people. It went on to say that they have to pay in bitcoin if they don't want the bomb to detonate.
"They want them to pay $20,000 in bitcoin's sent to a certain location in order to stop the bomb. It's a threat that's coming by email and the English that is used in the threat is not very good English," says Chief VanBrederode.
Among those locally that received threats is the Rochester Police Department, the Geneva Police Department, Catholic Charities Community Services, Cornerstone Eye Associates, the Ontario County Office Building and members of the St. John Fisher College community.
The Office of Safety and Security for St. John Fisher College sent the following notice to the community Thursday evening.
HaHa, I gained a rank. I've been here since the beginning. Thanks

"Fisher Community,
This afternoon, numerous members of the St. John Fisher College community received a suspicious email that contained an unspecified threat. The emails were similar, but not identical. At this time, we do not believe that there is any reason for concern or that there is a credible threat.
Upon notification, the Office of Information Technology and the Office of Safety and Security immediately contacted local authorities to investigate. Members of the College's Emergency Response Team (ERT) were also assembled, and followed the appropriate protocol.
We remain in contact with the authorities, and have since learned that news organizations, government entities, libraries, police departments, and schools across the country received similar emails.
We do ask all members of the campus community to report any further suspicious emails or unusual activity to the Office of Safety and Security at (585) 385-8025."
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says while they investigate each incident individually, there is no indication at this time that these threats are credible. However. the sheriff's office is alerting the public to remain vigilant and call 911 to report any suspicious activities while law enforcement continue to investigate.
Across the country, threats are being reported at news outlets, government buildings, libraries, police departments and schools among other places of business.
