there's this great quote from one of the anime I love.
basically the character is explaining why there are a bunch of different currencies and why people dont just pick one and use that.
Governments issue money, and the trustworthiness of the government is tied to the trustworthiness of their monies. People will use the currencies of the governments they trust to still be around tomorrow or the day after.
Why would they go after the governments? to get control of the money. Why control the money? So that you can control the populace and thereby control the government
