Brock Long, Who Oversaw Trump Administration's Response to Hurricane Maria, Resigns as FEMA Chief

WASHINGTON – FEMA Administrator Brock Long, who drew praise and criticism for his agency's response to major disasters, including Hurricane Maria, is leaving the agency.
“Over the last two years, Administrator Long has admirably led the men and women of FEMA during very difficult, historic and complex times," Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said about his resignation, which was announced Wednesday.
Deputy Administrator Pete Gaynor will become acting administrator.
Long, 43, has helmed the agency through several major disasters, including Western wildfires last year and the destruction of Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Peter Gaynor, director of the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency, could be headed for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, pending his confirmation in the U.S. Senate.
Gaynor was tapped by President Donald Trump for the job of deputy administrator, serving under FEMA administrator Brock Long who says that Gaynor “has a wealth of experience in emergency management and the agency looks forward to the Rhode Islander’s “speedy confirmation.”
FEMA is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
In January, Gaynor answered questions that The Providence Journal asked about the state’s level of preparedness for nuclear attack by a rogue North Korean missile.
Soon after, Gaynor testified before a House Homeland Security subcommittee held in reaction to a false missile alert in Hawaii in January.
Gaynor previously served as the director of the Providence Emergency Management Agency.
He also spent more than two decades in the Marine Corps as an enlisted marine and infantry officer.
At one point, he was the executive officer responsible for the security of Camp David. He held the title of heading up plans, policy and operations during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Gaynor has a bachelor’s degree in history from Rhode Island College and a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College in Newport.

FACEBOOK and FTC in TALKS for possible MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FINE
–Facebook Inc. (FB) and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission are in talks for a potential "multi-billion-dollar" fine to settle an investigation into the company's privacy practices, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
–The report, which cited two people familiar with the probe, said the fine would be the largest the FTC ever imposed on a technology company.
