In a free society like ours, you basically have three choices.
You can leave. You can try to change the laws. Or you can do
neither and implicitly agree to obey the laws. That ’ s a social
contract.
This idea goes all the way back to the trial of Socrates
(469 – 399 bce) in ancient Athens. 2
Despite thinking that the
jury was against him before the trial began, Socrates accepted
the guilty verdict — on the charge of corrupting the youth —
and its terrible penalty: death. But why so? Because he agreed
to live by their rules even without explicitly saying so. He was
born there, raised there, educated there, and protected there.
He even fought in the army defending Athens. He never left
and he never tried to change the laws. In short, Socrates made
a social contract with Athens — an implicit agreement to follow
their laws no matter what the outcome.
But this doesn ’ t apply to Alice. She wasn ’ t born in
Wonderland; she wasn ’ t raised there or educated there. And
she ’ s not an immigrant who moves in willingly — she literally
fell into the place! Of the three options in a free society (leave,
change things, or implicitly agree to obey), Alice is desperately
trying to leave. She does not have an implicit agreement to
obey, so she doesn ’ t have a social contract. She has every right
to use violence against the court.
Lewis Carroll would have known about the trial and death
of Socrates. He was a classically educated Englishman.
last point and then I'm off to the matrix... it has been intimated that Lewis Carroll had a thing for young girls and Alice is a fantasy about a real girl... and much as been said to prove as much... does this put our Alice as victim herself to gropy old men? to what extent does the shield of "but I was abused too" extend to the abuser in the cycle, if at all? redemption involves coming clean and admitting all the wrongs and then paying penance to make it right as much as is possible and then a where necessary a punitive measure is heaped on...and the final step is to forego that sin. I don't see much sorrow (yet) in our Alice. that could rapidly change, but don't expect it to.

Yes ...that puts it perfectly. The choice is up to the person. You can lead the way but they have to "initiate" or jump off the cliff - or down the hole
I have been reading carlos casteneda recently and the whole initiation "cliff idea" has me wrapped up in a riddle
I don't know if it relates but still...it's like going down the rabbit hole searching for truth that the soul desires
I find myself vacillating between the need to find all truth and getting caught in the brambles of all that entails, and rising above it and staying at the macro and seeing less strife.
When we focus on the things that have universal Truth: faith, hope, charity, love... we tend to find more allies
But some of the deep dives reveal truth so jarring to our sense of peace...
