Shelby County Election Commission held a special meeting to review early voting decisions.
The meeting comes after the Shelby County Democratic Party accused the commission of trying to suppress the African-American vote with their selection of five early voting locations next month.
Shelby County election officials are changing course after controversy over the location of an early voting site.
Traditionally, Calvary Episcopal Church is the first location to open for early voting in Shelby County.
But plans to change to move that site to the Agricenter was met with a lot of pushback.
Democrats didn't like the fact that the precinct was Republican-leaning, and it was a long drive for many drivers, especially in south and north Memphis.
“As my grandmother would say, this is a hot mess,” said Fred Thompson, who is angry about the changes.
Frustrations ran over at the specially-called Shelby County Election Commission meeting.
The biggest complaint were plans to open the Agricenter four days before other early voting sites on July 13.
The Democrats asked for the commission not to make a change in the middle of an election cycle.
“Open all sites just like you did for the primaries,” said Patrice Robinson.
Election Commissioner Norma Lester made the motion for a compromise which is to scrap the Agricenter and instead open Republican-heavy New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Germantown and Democratic-heavy Abundant Grace Fellowship Church on Shelby Drive for the additional four days.
“We have oscillated between the number of sites and when we've opened them for a whole variety of reasons and we've found if we're open for 14 days or 10 days, you get about the same percentage of voters anyway,” said Robert Meyers, chairman of Shelby County Election Commission.
The board also added five additional early voting sites with four of them outside the 240 loop and in Republican districts.
“I don't have a problem with Republicans having additional sites because a majority of the sites have been in favor of Democrats, I just have a problem with the way this was handled,” said Democratic Election Commissioner Norma Lester.
The board voted on these changes when Lester was out of town and without the public's input. Many left this meeting disappointed with the outcome.
“The Shelby County Democratic party is emphatically against this decision and they're going to hear from us at the voting booth,” said Corey Strong with Shelby County Democrats.
WMC5 also learned that the Shelby County Election Commission building will also be open for early voting.
All traditional early voting sites will open on July 18.
