Requirements aimed at curbing Tennessee's opioid epidemic are among more than 150 new laws taking effect.

Gov. Bill Haslam's "TN Together" opioid plan largely kicks in Sunday, July 1, when many laws take effect annually and a new budget year begins.

Tennessee will limit initial opioid prescriptions to a three-day supply, with exceptions for major surgical procedures, cancer and hospice treatment, sickle cell disease and treatment in certain licensed facilities.

Among other components, the laws will incentivize offenders to complete substance use treatment programs in prison and make dealing fentanyl and similar dangerous substances second-degree murder when it causes a death.

The $37.5 billion budget includes $16 million-plus in new opioid services money, $30.2 million more for school safety and $3 million to help schools equip new buses with seatbelts.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Court records show a man charged with killing five people at a Maryland newspaper was fired from a government IT contractor because of concerns about his "suitability."

Jarrod Ramos is charged with murder after police say he opened fire Thursday at Capital Gazette offices in Annapolis.
District of Columbia Superior Court records show Ramos sued Virginia-based Enterprise Information Systems in 2014 over lost wages.

In a letter to the company's president filed in court records, Ramos said the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics requested he be removed from his job.
Ramos wrote he was only told there was a "suitability" concern. A panel of judges wrote that the prime contractor "demanded" Ramos be fired for unspecified reasons.
Ramos won $1,200 in the suit for a bonus he said EIS had denied him.
EIS officials did not respond immediately Saturday to a request for comment.
A U.S. Labor Department spokesman said Ramos worked on IT contracts for the labor statistics bureau from 2007 to 2014.

ARLINGTON, Va. (ABC7) — Passengers were taken off a United Express Jet at Reagan National Airport after its cockpit started smoking Sunday, according to authorities.

Metropolitan Media Relations says that airport police and fire crews responded to the scene and that no one was injured. Airport authorities say United flight 6122 was taxiing to leave for Houston when the smoke was reported and passengers and crew evacuated.
The airport is now operating normally and passengers were moved to a different plane, officials say. The plane is being checked.

At a Democratic fundraiser, Barack Obama never used President Donald Trump's name but implied that he is using fear as a weapon. Do you agree? www.fox32chicago.com/news/obama-like-trump-grappled-with-family-immigration

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - The Trump administration isn't the first to grapple with the question of how to handle tens of thousands of immigrant families stopped along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Four years ago, Barack Obama faced a similar crisis when record numbers of Central American immigrants fleeing violence began showing up at the border. Officials had to deal with the same court case the current administration began fighting Thursday, a day after President Donald Trump issued a new executive order to stop separating migrant families whose parents were arrested for illegally entering the country.

More than 60,000 family "units" - which the U.S. government defines as a parent and child - were stopped along the border in the 2014 fiscal year, a fourfold increase from a year earlier. In the last fiscal year, that number exceeded 70,000.
