Meredith) -- Dozens of people are sick after eating contaminated food at a birthday party cookout in North Carolina, health department officials said.
Several partygoers reported gastrointestinal symptoms following the event at an apartment complex in Charlotte on Saturday.
It's likely someone who prepared the food did not wash their hands properly, exposing others to fecal matter, Mecklenburg County Health Director Gibbie Harris said.
At least 40 people fell ill, including 18 who were admitted to the hospital. Some people are also infected with Shigella, a "highly contagious" disease that is spread through feces, the Charlotte Observer reported.
Health officials are concerned more partygoers may still get sick because symptoms of Shigella can take one to three days to show up after someone is infected. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach pain.
The department is still investigating the outbreak. Meanwhile, it's urging anyone who brought food home from the event to throw it away.
