At least 13 fake military recruitment websites tricked potentially millions of people into giving their contact information to telemarketers, according to a complaint by the Federal Trade Commission.
The sites falsely claimed they would not share personal information.
In reality, the telemarketers sold the personal information to other marketing companies and contacted people who submitted information to promote "military friendly" colleges instead of military service, the FTC lawsuit said.

President Donald Trump is planning to swing through Arizona later this month to help bolster Republican chances of holding a majority in the U.S. Congress.
Trump had tentatively planned a visit the first week of this month but the visit was scrapped following the death of U.S. Sen. John McCain, who died Aug. 25 following a 13-month battle with brain cancer.
Trump's team is considering Sept. 19 or Sept. 20 as possible dates, according to people familiar with preliminary discussions.
Neither the venue nor the guest list has been finalized.

Phoenix's Government Relations Manager John Wayne Gonzales resigned Monday following a city investigation that uncovered a "pattern of advances towards women" that "was so pervasive that city employees and women from other cities were warned about him."
Gonzales, who had worked for Phoenix for 18 years, served as the city's liaison between the state, neighboring cities and other governmental bodies.
In May, an intern for the Phoenix Budget and Research Department filed a sexual harassment complaint against Gonzales with the city's Equal Opportunity Department.
