There's actually a pretty fair statistical argument that it is a coincidence. ex. Asians, who are a small minority of the population but a large portion of academia. Whenever higher averages are present they become exponentially more apparent at extremes, such as women being more caring so are vastly over-represented in nursing.

But for sure there's ingroup preference even if the initial cause of the over-representation wasn't ingroup preference.
