Eh depends on what kind of armor you want for what situation what are your threats realistically speaking

generally anything hand to hand will be chainmail, or gambeson + coat of plates and interlockign plates for other parts of the armor

anything powder related will need for more modern protection, you can make cheap kevlar plaets from i think fiberglass and resin

itll save you from pistols but rifles are a death sentence

Or you could spend $1000 on a nice kevlar vest and tier 3+ strike plates to go in it
