You can't mass produce the panther, takes too much oil, you can't just through Russia without stopping, you don't have the oil, you can't send bombers to England without oil, etc

They couldnt turn off the engine because it would never start again in the negative 35 Celcius temperature

2019-09-26 08:32:59 UTC

They had no choice, so i declare the POWs statement irrelevant

2019-09-26 08:33:25 UTC

They could but not in an emergency, and also you'll probably kill yourself, but, I think it was the Soviets or Germans who used to stick a fire under their gas tanks to get the oil to move

source?

Google German kaltstart techniques I might send a link if I can find what I'm talking about. Other than that diesel engines actually work great in the cold, diesel will work even as a gel, the problem is the carburator. It needs to be hot for the engine to sustain, but once u got it warmed up you're golden

A Russian soldier wrote "Let us simply consider the ideal situation where the weather is warm enough that the engine requires no pre-heating with fuel heater, blow torch or diesel-soaked, burning rags. "

Other confirmation is coming from Farmers but few primary sources concerning this exact thing

2019-09-26 08:48:01 UTC

ah alright ill be sure to look that up

2019-09-26 08:48:20 UTC

you're a very respectable argumentor, it is good to argue with someone as rational as you

2019-09-26 08:48:26 UTC

i always appreciate the rationale

@hitlerbutwithvaginas diesels don't use carburators, they must use injectors and preheat.

2019-09-28 01:35:55 UTC

Haha sorry! Got confused in the writing!

2019-09-28 01:35:58 UTC

Second , as strange as it can be diesel engine works better at low temperatures.
The problem with petrol was that you need it to evaporate in the carburetor. At -35 that doesn't happen. So you need to heat up the engine seriously.

2019-09-28 01:43:45 UTC

Germans used petrol, which was problematic. Dieles engines use glow plugs, which meant you could relatively warm up the engine that way, not to mention the t34 had air compression starters which would get the fuel moving, and they sometimes had preheaters, the Germans had neither, and used a fuel that was bad for the winter, but the cold wasn't a problem because of the fuel, well, it was, but it was a big problem because batteries suck in the cold, and if I remember right, half of the battery's job on the panzer carients in Stalingrad (pz3s n shit) was radio communication, and this was a huge issue, because Stalingrad was basically a giant heap of building materials, so you had tanks that couldn't communicate, if they could even start via kaltstart techniques previously mentioned, in a pile of city which was more or less untraversable.

2019-09-28 01:48:45 UTC

But there were techniques to get them started, namely, wrapping the carburator in rags and lighting em, a safer, but still really stupid way was to use a blowtorch.
