if you look at Cuban living standards compared to the rest of the Caribbean including the US colonies and even put Puerto Rico, Cuba is off the charts. Their medical care is first rate, better than ours. When there are food shortages they are due to the blockade and not to internal policies. I don’t deny that Cuba has a lot of the problems of family existing socialism, and I am no fan of one party states with repressive policies about free-speech organization, but Cuba has done an astounding job of creating a viable alternative kind of society under extraordinarily difficult conditions with real attention to the needs of the people.
