(Northern Syria, which is under chiefly Kurdish control, provides 90% of state revenue to Assad's government due to it being extremely rich in natural gas).

The US will likely look to strangle Syria's ability to finance itself so Russia has to pour more funds into the war and thereby weaken Russia financially and economically further.

Russia's already struggling deeply economically due to sanctions causing a contraction in their export market and a severe depreciation of the Russian currency.
