@fallot I've been doing the visualization/guitar exercise and it's yielded some good material, but I noticed some things in the process

the first thing I noticed was that when I visualized something, played guitar until it was in accord with the vision, then played it for my wife, it made her visualize quite similar things. There's something universal going on there

Also while trying to capture a feeling in notes, I noticed that many commonly done things actively get in the way of that

like you can start with a little riff that evokes some meaning, then technically within the scale and existing rhythm you could add a whole bunch of other bells and whistles that are technically okay, but add no meaning

I concluded that doing that only serves to dilute what meaning is actually there, and resolved not to do it ever even if it means sounding sparse

I realized that almost 100% of the music written for popular consumption regardless of genre is music for music's sake, aka meaningless fart noises

if I started adding bells and whistles for the sake of trying to make my thing sound "neat," I would ultimately end up with a pop rock chord progression as the logical conclusion of it

if I repeated the same "lol cool sound!!!" process on a synth I'd end up with fartstep

it's all identical in spirit if not in form

I also realized how dumb it is to repeat anything unless absolutely necessary. You don't write a good paragraph in a story and then say "lol this is good" and copy paste it 5 times, that would be retarded. Yet, that's industry standard

it's so that the next drive by listener on the radio can tune in and not miss much

which is the same error, essentially, adding things to the song that don't add meaning

but there's more to it there - it necessarily means that the most condensed version of the music on the radio could be the verses and just one repetition of the chorus, which would be like a minute long. The format limits the amount that can be expressed in it

that's the gist of what I figured out
