But not statues made with chisels with other statues made with chisels, and statues made with hammer and nail with statues made with hammer and nail.

2017-08-11 20:27:42 UTC

Technical = this music is hard to play.

2017-08-11 20:27:45 UTC

So what?

2017-08-11 20:35:08 UTC

well if i were going to try to break what I mean down, I mean something like the use of more complex musical ideas and structures like atypical time sigs / changing time sigs; music composed in rare modes or even more esoteric composition approaches like chromaticism or stochastic shit influenced by classical guys like Cage or Penderecki or Stockhausen; music that abandons the pop/rock structure and more traditional classical structures

2017-08-11 20:36:28 UTC

nothing is wrong with any of that

2017-08-11 20:36:51 UTC

but many attempts to explore music through those means fail

2017-08-11 20:38:50 UTC

these guys do some of this

2017-08-11 20:40:36 UTC

some new Ihsahn stuff

2017-08-11 20:40:53 UTC

is an unsuccessful exploration to me

2017-08-11 20:42:03 UTC

Leprous

2017-08-11 20:42:32 UTC

basically all djent lol

2017-08-11 20:43:24 UTC

Gorguts sometimes verges on failure

2017-08-11 20:43:25 UTC

Yes, but that tells you the how of the music, not what the music is about. The point of music is to say things, it makes most sense to categorize it on the basis of what it says. Technical bands like Immolation and Suffocation have much more in common with less technical bands like Pestilence and Autopsy than they do with Necrophagist and Spawn of Possession...etc.

2017-08-11 20:43:37 UTC

I totally agree

2017-08-11 20:44:06 UTC

I'm just saying that some bands who to me don't seem to have a decent artistic vision

2017-08-11 20:44:12 UTC

still attempt a lot of musical complexity

2017-08-11 20:44:44 UTC

and that is a certain flavor of uninteresting to me

2017-08-11 20:44:50 UTC

Most good dm bands eschew pop structure, tech bands like immolation and suffocation aren't at all unique.

2017-08-11 20:45:34 UTC

Yes, because musical genres now are meaningless niches.

2017-08-11 20:45:42 UTC

Like porn genres.

2017-08-11 20:45:44 UTC

haha

2017-08-11 20:46:00 UTC

and fantasy literature

2017-08-11 20:47:13 UTC

And half of them are only superficially distinguishable from pop.

2017-08-11 20:47:23 UTC

No matter what the genre says.

2017-08-11 20:47:26 UTC

my ultimate point is that I am enjoying the immolation album because I feel like it is musically interesting enough to not bore me as I listen actively

2017-08-11 20:47:40 UTC

but I also have a good emotional-musical reaction to the music itself

2017-08-11 20:50:29 UTC

Most of what calls itself metal is pop or punk or noise in disguise.

2017-08-11 20:52:58 UTC

Gorguts is great up to Obscura

2017-08-11 20:53:01 UTC

that doesn't fail

2017-08-11 20:53:56 UTC

i even like a lot of their later stuff

2017-08-11 20:54:07 UTC

but like sections of songs or whatever will bore me

2017-08-11 20:54:28 UTC

like some of the latest single

2017-08-11 20:54:32 UTC

some of Colored Sands

2017-08-11 20:56:06 UTC

but remember these goys

2017-08-11 20:56:39 UTC

once in a while they find an okay riff but mostly just dull

2017-08-11 21:04:06 UTC

that Dodheimsgard album is horrible, even worse than their industrial stuff @UOC

2017-08-11 21:05:29 UTC

yeah but it's "avant-garde" or whatever

2017-08-11 21:05:33 UTC

while The Faceless is your usual mallcore but this time trying too hard to be technical

2017-08-11 21:05:42 UTC

yeah
