Definitely, I'm not sure where Steele stood politically, lots of talk saying he was a Nazi sympathizer to a degree, but seeing as lots of the things he did would be frowned upon by most WN organizations, I doubt it.

and that is inherently a turn off

this is never what "alt right" was to start with, the Spencerites and people like Greg Johnson were more marginal figures
Steve Sailer, the MRAs, Gamergate, Orthosphere, the HBDers

I admit that I became a self identified White Nationalist mainly as you said, out of a place of confusion and dissatisfaction with the modern world, and after seeing establishment 'right wing' politics wasn't standing for what I thought was important.
