there are plenty of states in the USA where you can absolutely own a gun, as long as it's locked in a safe, unloaded, with a trigger lock on it, and ammunition locked in a separate safe in a separate room, and you can absolutely use it to defend yourself as long as you warned the attacker several times, tried yelling for help, called 911, lightly pinched and slapped him to discourage him from attacking you, tried fist fighting him first (even if he is armed), and finally retreated all the way to the very last corner of the last room of the top story of your house. Then, when you shoot him, the lawyers will argue over whether or not you had a duty to jump out the window vs shooting him

and if the guy does die, they can easily establish premeditated murder, because in order for you to shoot him to death, you had to unlock your gun from one safe and go into the other room and unlock your ammo from the other safe, load the gun and then go shoot him, and you cannot do that shit if you are under life threatening distress, so their lawyer can easily say "see? he just loaded the gun and went and shot the guy and lied and said he was being attacked"
