what im advocating for is, only assume they have a gun if theres direct evidence they have a gun
don't rely on these shorthand probabilities
?
@casualgardener If someone reaches for their pants to pull out a gun you have about 0.25 seconds to save your life
If you tell someone who you believe is a threat not to reach for their pockets
and they reach for their pockets
yeah thats fine!
there is reason to believe your life is in danger
because they did not comply
so shooting them is justified
thats not what happens though! im talking about other circumstances
You have right to hold them at gunpoint
okay, the vast minority?
The difference is that if a police is pointing a gun at me, i'm not going to make sudden movements to places where handguns are commonly stored and then have my family cry racism when im dead.
That is the vast, vast majority of police "murders"
brb poop and smoke
Reminder that there's no ripple in the timeline when a white man is shot by a black cop.
sure, and there are unjust white deaths
that said, data don't support the idea that white people are disproportionately shot based on their race
this is the most famous study of police shootings and bias
Yes it does
really?
show me
I don't need to
It's common sense
lol
cmon
you need to show proof
if youre gonna make a statement like that
Anything can happen based on race
Black officers account for a little more than 10 percent of all fatal police shootings. Of those they kill, though, 78 percent were black.
White officers, given their great numbers in so many of the country’s police departments, are well represented in all categories of police killings. White officers killed 91 percent of the whites who died at the hands of police. And they were responsible for 68 percent of the people of color killed.
In 2013, 29% of all crime suspects fatally killed by police were black. However, blacks accounted for 50% of all murders in 2013. Blacks commit many other serious crimes at rates higher than 29%. This suggests that white suspects are actually more likely to be shot by police than black suspects.
