🇺🇸 **Charlie Rose Fired by CBS over Sexual Harassment Allegations**
<https://archive.is/B12JM>

Veteran broadcaster Charlie Rose has been fired by CBS News after eight separate women accused him of sexual harassment.

“A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately,” CBS News President David Rhodes wrote in a message to employees. “This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program.”

Some of the allegations against Rose include “lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, or groping [women’s] breasts, buttocks, and genital areas.”

The firing represents a major blow to CBS News and the mainstream media as a whole, with Rose widely considered to be one of the network’s most experienced and respected journalists with a career spanning over 40 years.

<http://archive.is/yQyvk>
Japan is dealing with what economists call a"demographic time bomb."

Through avicious cycle of low fertility and low consumer spending, the country's economy has gradually shrunk over the last 20 years.

Japan has coped with this demographic time bomb in creative and sometimes extreme ways. But the reputation Japan still maintains as a tech leader with a booming economy belies the daily reality for many citizens.

🇺🇸 **U.S. sanctions 13 Chinese and North Korean organizations**
<http://archive.is/eRJ1q>

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions against 13 Chinese and North Korean organizations Washington accused of helping evade nuclear restrictions against Pyongyang and supporting the country through trade.

The action, coming one day after President Donald Trump put North Korea back on a list of state sponsors of terrorism, was announced by the U.S. Treasury in a statement on its website.

The new sanctions demonstrate the Trump administration’s focus on hurting trade between China and North Korea, which the administration has said is key to pressuring Pyongyang to back away from its ambition to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States.

<http://archive.is/pB9z6>

Last week a series of 10 mini-earthquakes struck Monterey County in the US state, raising fears a monster tremor could devastate the region.

A powerful, 4.6 magnitude quake 13 miles northeast of Gonzales, along the San Andreas Fault, was the largest to strike the region.

The San Andreas Fault – a 750-mile fissure that runs the length of California – is thought to be long overdue a “Big One” earthquake measuring magnitude 7 or greater.

Something strange sailed past Earth last month, and thanks to some quick work, astronomers managed to get their first good look at a visitor from interstellar space.

Now named ‘Oumuamua, Hawaiian for “a messenger from afar arriving first,” the object is the first known lump of rock and ice from another star system, which gives astronomers a chance to glimpse a scrap left over from an alien planet’s formation.

“This has been crazy-cool. For the asteroid community, this is as big as the gravitational-wave announcement,” NASA astronomer Joseph Masiero said when the object was discovered, referencing the recent detections of ripples in space-time that have been amazing astrophysicists.

UK Finance Minister Philip Hammond admitted Britain is no longer one the five leading global economies as he delivered a gloomy budget statement in parliament on Wednesday.

“Britain is the world's sixth largest economy,” Hammond said in his budget speech to parliament.

The latest numbers, published by the (((International Monetary Fund))), reveal that France will slip ahead of the UK in this year's ranking of global economies with the gap between the two projected to get significantly wider in 2018. The rating is based on GDP forecasts, with the (((IMF))) saying France had outpaced Britain for the first time since 2013.

<https://archive.is/GxI2C>

The anonymous accusers, who spoke to The Huffington Post in a story published Wednesday evening, are the third and fourth women to accuse the “Saturday Night Live” alumus of improper conduct.

One of the accusers told the Huffington Post that Franken “grabbed my buttocks during a photo op” at a June 2007 event hosted by the Minnesota Women’s Political Caucus. The second accuser said Franken “cupped her butt” with his hand at a Democratic fundraiser in 2008, then suggested they “visit the bathroom together.”

In a statement to The Huffington Post, Franken said, “It’s difficult to respond to anonymous accusers, and I don’t remember those campaign events.” In reference to the second accuser’s claim, Franken added “I can categorically say that I did not proposition anyone to join me in any bathroom.”

The woman who accused Franken of groping her in 2007 told The Huffington Post that the senator is “a serial groper” and criticized people who said the allegations against Franken are “a right-wing conspiracy.”

🇺🇸 **YouTube cracks down on disturbing content featuring children after backlash**
<https://archive.is/Ut1Rf>

Video hosting giant YouTube has begun clamping down on content showing children in vulnerable situations as well as disturbing material aimed at children. The move followed a wave of criticism against the video streaming service.

YouTube has “expanded its enforcement guidelines” concerning the removal of content featuring minors “that may be endangering a child, even if that was not the uploader's intent," Johanna Wright, vice president of product management said in a statement. She added the service also expanded its age-restriction policies on content featuring family entertainment characters in videos “containing mature themes or adult humor.”

The statement published on the YouTube official blog Wednesday, also said the service had discovered a large number of videos that pretend to be family-friendly but are “clearly not.” “While some of these videos may be suitable for adults, others are completely unacceptable,” and the company is in the process of removing the content.

🇮🇱 **Israel ‘covertly’ cooperates with Arab states, Netanyahu says**
<https://archive.is/mZNCF>

Israel is covertly cooperating with some Arab nations, the Israeli PM has revealed, expressing hope that this practice will expand. Benjamin Netanyahu’s revelation comes after IDF chief of staff said recently that Tel Aviv is ready to share intelligence on Iran with Saudi Arabia.

"Fruitful cooperation with Arab countries is usually covert,” Netanyahu said at a memorial event for Israel's first Prime Minister David Ben Gurion Thursday. Those ties are “carried out constantly under cover of secrecy,” he emphasized.

“I believe that these relations (with Arab states) will continue to develop and I believe that they will bear fruit for the expansion of the peace orbit,” the PM said. “The residents of the neighboring countries will cooperate with us because otherwise they will have to cooperate with foreign slavers,” he said as cited by the Ynet website.

Israel has been pursuing rapprochement with the Gulf monarchies and other Muslim nations in the region, citing common interests and threats, with Iran their top target. Israel currently has diplomatic relations only with Egypt and Jordan, while the rest of the Arab world maintains that any relations are possible only after the Israelis withdraw from the Palestinian territories, captured in the Six-Day War of 1967.

🇮🇶 **Iraq launches operation to clear desert near Syria of ISIS fighters**
<https://archive.is/SX2XC>

Iraqi forces have launched an operation to clear the desert bordering Syria of ISIS, in a final push to rid the country of the terrorist group, the military said. Troops from the Iraqi army are searching a large strip of border land where ISIS terrorists are thought to be hiding after being ousted from its former strongholds.

Iraqi forces on Friday captured the border town of Rawa, the last remaining town under Islamic State control, signalling the collapse of the group's 'caliphate' proclaimed after it overran much of Iraq's north and west in 2014. Iraqi army commanders say the military campaign will continue until all the frontier with Syria is secured to prevent Islamic State from launching cross border attacks.

'The objective behind the operation is to prevent remaining Daesh groups from melting into the desert region and using it as a base for future attacks,' said army colonel Salah Kareem, referring to Islamic State by an Arabic acronym. 'We will completely secure the desert from all terrorist groups of Daesh and declare Iraq clean of those germs,' said army Brigadier General Shakir Kadhim.

One person was shot outside a Missouri mall as hoards of shoppers fought each other for Black Friday deals. A brawl broke out in an Alabama mall leaving medics to attend to an injured man as the store shut its doors. Stores across the US opened their doors early to thousands of bargain hunters at 5pm on Thanksgiving Day.

Shoppers have braved cold weather to stand in line but others skipped lines by dressing as store employees. Estimated 164 million people are planning to shop or are considering shopping during Thanksgiving weekend. Of those considering shopping a survey found that 32 million plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday will remain the busiest day with 115 million shoppers descending on US stores, the survey shows.

Consumers said they will spend an average $967.13 this year, according to Prosper Insights & Analytics. Adobe Analytics projects between Thanksgiving Day & Cyber Monday sales will likely hit $19.7 billion.

Workers at a half dozen Amazon distribution centers in Germany and one in Italy walked off the job Friday, in a protest timed to coincide with “Black Friday” to demand better wages from the American online giant.

In Germany, Ver.di union spokesman Thomas Voss said some 2,500 workers were on strike at Amazon facilities in Bad Hersfeld, Leipzig, Rheinberg, Werne, Graben and Koblenz. In a warehouse near Piacenza, in northern Italy, some workers walked off the job to demand “dignified salaries.”

The German union has been leading a push since 2013 for higher pay for some 12,000 workers in Germany, arguing Amazon employees receive lower wages than others in retail and mail-order jobs. Amazon says its distribution warehouses in Germany are logistics centers and employees earn relatively high wages for that industry.

🇻🇪 **Venezuelans suffer as malaria outbreak spreads in drug-short nation**
<https://archive.is/3VCQY>

Unsanitary conditions in Bolivar are thought to have led to a recent flare-up in malaria, a life-threatening disease that had been largely brought under control in Venezuela in the 1990s.

The outbreak was likely initially caused by illegal mining. The miners cut down rainforests and often work in pools of stagnant water, which favors the spread of mosquitoes and malaria.

In a rare release of data earlier this year, government statistics showed there were 240,613 cases of malaria last year, up 76 percent compared with 2015, with most in Bolivar.

"We're going to die because there is no treatment," said homemaker Yaritza Figuera, 29. Suffering from malaria, her nine year-old son sat on the floor in a health center because the waiting room was full.

🇸🇪 **Church of Sweden to stop clergy calling God 'he' or 'the Lord' in bid to crack down on gendered language**
<https://archive.is/523Tj>

The Church of Sweden is encouraging its clergy to use the gender-neutral term "God" instead of referring to the deity as "he" or "the Lord". The decision was made on Thursday, wrapping up an eight-day meeting of the church's 251-member decision-making body. The decision will take effect on May 20 during Pentecost.

It is the latest move by the national Evangelical Lutheran church to modernise its 31-year-old handbook setting out how services should be conducted. The decision to update the book of worship gives priests new options on how to refer to God during their services.

Priests can now open their services by referring to the traditional "Father, son and Holy Ghost" or the gender-neutral phrase "in the name of God and the Holy Trinity". Other gender-neutral options are available for other parts of the Church of Sweden liturgy.

<https://archive.is/UalmN>

At least 235 people were killed when gunmen opened fire and bombed a mosque in Egypt's volatile Sinai Peninsula on Friday. Government officials said 109 more had been injured in the attack — among the deadliest in Egypt's history. Police sources told the Associated Press that men in four off-road vehicles opened fire on worshippers in the al-Rawdah mosque in the town of Al Rawdah. NBC News could not immediately independently verify that account.

Two eyewitnesses and a security source told Reuters that the suspected militants targeted supporters of the security forces attending prayers. Citing official sources, the state-run MENA news agency reported that the mosque is largely attended by Sufi Muslims — a form of Islam considered heretical by some conservatives and extremists like the Islamic State group.

Around 50 ambulances were transferring victims to hospitals, according to the Ministry of Health. A statement issued by Egypt's General Prosecutor Nabil Sadiq put the death toll at 235, with at least 109 others wounded. A Health Ministry official told Al Jazeera TV that “there were many people inside the mosque — it’s only a small mosque." Gunmen shot worshippers fleeing the initial attack, he added.

<https://archive.is/1jxdV>

The self-styled “World's Most Famous Limousine Driver” Mike Hughes, 61, has suffered a setback in his attempts to prove the Earth is flat. On Saturday, a federal agency blocked his homemade rocket launch by withholding permission to use public land.

The steam-powered rocket was scheduled to take off in Amboy, California, a ghost town in the Mojave Desert along route 66, but Hughes couldn't get permission from the Bureau of Land Management to conduct the launch. Hughes claims he was given verbal permission over a year ago while awaiting final approval from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA).

“It's still happening. We're just moving it three miles down the road,” Hughes told The Washington Post Friday. “This is what happens anytime you have to deal with any kind of government agency. I don't see [the launch] happening until about Tuesday, honestly. It takes three days to set up… You know, it's not easy because it's not supposed to be easy.”

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) told the Washington Post that there were no official records of contact between the agency and Hughes and that he had not requested the special recreation permit required to conduct the launch.

The mainly peaceful rally in Brussels turned violent when several dozen protesters broke away from the main march to vandalize local shops and attack police lines. Police used water cannons to disperse the group after they threw projectiles at officers. While no one was reportedly injured in the clashes, Brussels public prosecutor’s office announced that authorities made 16 judicial arrests and 55 administrative arrests following the clashes in the Brussels-Capital Ixelles area.

In the German capital, Berlin, hundreds of members of the African community dressed up as slaves in chains and rallied outside the Libyan Embassy, holding signs that read: “Stop black slavery in Europe and Libya,” and “Black Lives Matter.”

“It is very crucial that we come here today to express our feelings about the illicit torture of the black African people in Libya who are basically migrants who are trying to cross into the European continent for a better life. That is why we are here to express how we feel about the torture. It’s really disheartening when we hear about the slavery that started in Libya, the sales of African migrants and the torture,” Jace Owie, a Nigerian activist from Citizen Diplomat, told RT’s Ruptly video agency.

In all, the FBI fielded 203,086 requests on Black Friday, up from the previous single-day highs of 185,713 last year and 185,345 in 2015. The two previous records also were recorded on Black Friday.

Gun checks, required for purchases at federally licensed firearm dealers, are not a measure of actual gun sales. The number of firearms sold Friday is likely higher because multiple firearms can be included in one transaction by a single buyer.

Amazon workers are being treated like “animals,” forced to work to the point of physical collapse, it has been revealed. An undercover reporter for the Daily Mirror laid bare the working conditions at the world’s largest retailer. Daily Mirror reporter Alan Selby found that workers at the Amazon plant in Tilbury, Essex, were so tired that they “fell asleep on their feet” while working a 55-hour week.

Selby spent five weeks as an undercover worker at the warehouse, which is said to be as big as 11 football fields, and where employees have to walk up to 3 miles in order to reach the toilets. Amazon workers are constantly being monitored by cameras while being expected to package up to 300 items an hour – or one every 12 and a half seconds.

“Those who could not keep up with the punishing targets faced the sack – and some who buckled under the strain had to be attended by ambulance crews,” Selby said. With timed toilet breaks and just two half hours off, conditions at the warehouse are so unbearable that one employee said they “killed” emoloyees.

🇺🇸 **Chicago bakery loses one-third of staff to immigration raids**
<https://archive.is/k4Npu>

A Chicago, Illinois bakery that makes McDonald’s hamburger buns is struggling after a third of its workers were detained by immigration enforcement. The company is facing pressure to raise wages in order to attract replacements.

About 800, or 35 percent, of the workers at Cloverhill Bakery had to be replaced, reported Bloomberg News, citing the Zurich-based Aryzta AG. The company makes baked goods for fast-food chains and supermarkets. The workers were supplied by a job-placement agency that faced federal audits earlier this year.

In the first six months of President Donald Trump’s administration there was a spike in the number of immigrants arrested by federal agents in Chicago. Data from the US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) revealed an approximate 30 percent increase in arrests and deportations in Chicago compared to the end of the Obama administration.

<:trump:284711336934375425> **Sen. Warren Accuses Trump of 'Racial Slur' for Calling Her Pocahontas**
http://freebeacon.com/politics/warren-trump-will-not-silence-using-racial-slur-pocahontas/

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) told MSNBC's Ali Velshi on Monday that President Donald Trump will not silence her by using a "racial slur" like "Pocahontas."

Trump hosted an event at the White House to honor Navajo code talkers, where he referenced Pocahontas, a nickname he has used in the past to refer to Warren.

Velshi played a clip of Trump's comments and then asked if she would like to respond.

"I just want to thank you because you are very, very special people. You were here long before any of us were here," Trump said. "Although, we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago; they call her Pocahontas."

Trump has said he calls Warren "Pocahontas" in reference to her unsubstantiated claim to Cherokee heritage. Warren's 2012 Senate opponent, Scott Brown, criticized her for claiming Cherokee heritage on applications in order to gain an academic advantage.
