There are definitely bad people out there who will try to use whatever political changes may be coming in order to chiefly enrich themselves

I think we're on the precipice of creating a totalitarian / authoritarian state whose abuses and horrors will be inescapable because of our technology

and "good intentions" will pave the way there

There are bound to be totalitarian/authoritarian issues that pop up (as they on occasion do now), maybe it's overly optimistic to think they can be kept at bay
