if the AI can even be controlled at all once it gets advanced enough

Scientists and scholars don't seem too scared.

In fact, they seem rather optimistic

In fact, by definition, it's sort of that we don't know what would happen

But all of these projects are spearheaded by scientists - I don't see a future where a shithole like China gets there before we do - or is it possible? With republicans slowing down and retarding progress, maybe you're right to fear someone else getting the tech first...

If Americans get there first, I have no doubt that it would end up serving for the greater good though.

Even if they had political pressure to make them go something, they always find a way to do the right thing. Politicians have nothing on scientists as far as how clever and flexible they are.
