Police say Mateen went on a spree of gun violence during which he killed at least 49 people between Nov. 4 and Dec. 13.

The attack has shaken America. In the wake of the shooting, President Trump called on citizens to display "pride" on national holidays such as Halloween, Easter, Good Friday and Christmas.

1. The man's last tweet

The suspect posted a message to his wife, who lives three miles away from the Pulse nightclub, on Nov. 7, saying, ""This is my last message. Forgive my sins. God wants me to be an example. .. I pray you will accept this. I just wanted to thank you. I don't know what can be right."

Shortly after that, Mateen shot and killed at least 49 people and injured 53 others while a police SWAT team continued to hunt. The carnage prompted the federal government to launch a nationwide investigation to determine whether the attack was a terror attack or an act of domestic terrorism.

2. Mateen used the word 'Islamic' five times

On May 15, 2005, Omar "Gayslayer" Mateen walked into the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and opened fire, killing 49 people and injuring 53 more. While Pulse was only the 26th venue at which Mateen had carried out a shooting prior to this attack, he had been accused of attempted murder at the nearby gay strip club, G-Club 5. Mateen was reportedly known to attend the nightclub frequently since 2002, but he later moved out, reportedly for good. Mateen was also thought to be obsessed with gay pornography and believed that gay people should have sex only with their spouses. Mateen then went on to commit terrorist acts across the country.

He also allegedly attempted to assassinate former presidential hopeful Ron Paul. This was one of Mateen's earliest known attempts when shooting the Democratic senator at Fort Hood in Texas on March 2, 2009. He fired four shots from three different weapons, a shotgun, a rifle, and a knife. While at Ft. Hood he was also suspected of going on a shooting spree and killing four law enforcement officers. In his last court appearance he pleaded guilty to charges, claiming he tried to kill more people.
