so lets say in a hypothetical situation, would it make sense to have a gatling-style gun design but have it shouldered instead of mounting it or holding it on the hip. Kinda like some vladof guns in borderlands?
It doesn't make sense to have a shoulder fired gatling-style gun no, a hip-fired one doesn't serve any useful purpose other designs don't do better, either.
Certainly firing from the shoulder is more accurate than firing from the hip, but holding all that extra weight from the excess barrels, the electrical motor, and the tons of ammo you're chewing through will negate that advantage simply because it gets so heavy you can't keep steady, and accuracy isn't your main concern with a gatling either way, you're looking for area suppression
a human simply can't carry enough ammunition and still operate in field conditions that overheating becomes such a severe issue the extra barrels are justified, a light machine gun is a vastly superior weapon for the role
cool ty
Get those exoskeletons finished, we'll see what happens.
ohh shouldermounted miniguns
or crotch mounted shotguns
I considered exoskeletons, but that sort of also implies powerarmor, and then you're probably better off with a heavy rifle (say a .50 BMG "assault rifle") since your opponents are probably armored too. And even if they're not you're *still* probably better off with a modern day light machine gun in addition to a grenade launcher, a light RPG, or similar weapon system.
Curse you and your pragmatism, Crow.
Keep in mind an exoskeleton style system doesn't just let you carry heavier stuff, it could do things like stabilization assist as well
it is less of a stretch in a sci-fi setting, tho
a 50 bmg assualt rifle would be the coolest thing ever
since we're doing exoskeletons and such, it makes sense to throw in some AI-assisted sensors too, IR at the very least but perhaps even a portable radar, AI pings alerts for potential targets and the soldier can then verify that it's a valid target, let the AI help with aim-assist, and you can actually hit that target you've spotted a mile or two away
that wouldn't really be possible with a man-portable gatling
yeah but if you got your nice suit with ai and such why shouldnt i invest in an EMP device and disable your suit and take you prisonor
Obviously you harden this stuff.
EMP like that isn't a real thing
