Get those exoskeletons finished, we'll see what happens.

2018-11-09 18:15:32 UTC

ohh shouldermounted miniguns

2018-11-09 18:15:44 UTC

or crotch mounted shotguns

2018-11-09 18:20:04 UTC

I considered exoskeletons, but that sort of also implies powerarmor, and then you're probably better off with a heavy rifle (say a .50 BMG "assault rifle") since your opponents are probably armored too. And even if they're not you're *still* probably better off with a modern day light machine gun in addition to a grenade launcher, a light RPG, or similar weapon system.

2018-11-09 18:20:29 UTC

Curse you and your pragmatism, Crow.

2018-11-09 18:20:36 UTC

Keep in mind an exoskeleton style system doesn't just let you carry heavier stuff, it could do things like stabilization assist as well

2018-11-09 18:22:49 UTC

it is less of a stretch in a sci-fi setting, tho

2018-11-09 18:24:12 UTC

a 50 bmg assualt rifle would be the coolest thing ever

2018-11-09 18:28:34 UTC

since we're doing exoskeletons and such, it makes sense to throw in some AI-assisted sensors too, IR at the very least but perhaps even a portable radar, AI pings alerts for potential targets and the soldier can then verify that it's a valid target, let the AI help with aim-assist, and you can actually hit that target you've spotted a mile or two away

2018-11-09 18:28:57 UTC

that wouldn't really be possible with a man-portable gatling

2018-11-09 18:29:31 UTC

yeah but if you got your nice suit with ai and such why shouldnt i invest in an EMP device and disable your suit and take you prisonor

2018-11-09 18:29:57 UTC

Obviously you harden this stuff.

2018-11-09 18:29:58 UTC

EMP like that isn't a real thing

2018-11-09 18:30:16 UTC

or even worse i hack a bunch of suits that are supposed to guard the president at that moment and make them shoot everyone on sight

2018-11-09 18:30:37 UTC

Yeah, just like you hack a battleship and make them detonate their missiles.

2018-11-09 18:30:51 UTC

hacking doesn't work that way, either. obviously a military suit would have no external connection other than radio

2018-11-09 18:31:04 UTC

youd be suprised

2018-11-09 18:31:14 UTC

this is all still hypothetical

2018-11-09 18:31:39 UTC

And in this hypothetical world, military strategists and engineers have centuries of highly refined military precedent to design technology.

2018-11-09 18:31:58 UTC

Which means not leaving backdoors open for Achmed the Precocious Terrorist to hack a tank with his Apple II.

2018-11-09 18:33:17 UTC

i dont think there would be tanks in this hypothetical world as infantry will get the ability to carry way stronger weapons making tanks almost useless for combat

2018-11-09 18:33:49 UTC

if your run of the mill infantryman can carry a superpowerfull AT rocket why would you risk sending in a tank?

2018-11-09 18:35:47 UTC

you would need extremely heavy tanks to withstand these powerfull weapons which will inevidably lead to you needing to cut down on other areas like mobility or armament

2018-11-09 18:35:50 UTC

but to take one thing at a time, magical EMP that disables all electronics in range isn't a real thing. You could make one if you just up the voltage to silly level, but stuff can be hardened to resist, and all military tech will be, so we reach a point where instead of dragging fuckhuge batteries and stuff around it's cheaper and more efficient to just carry a gun you shoot high-speed pieces of metal at your enemy instead

2018-11-09 18:36:43 UTC

well that is the problem nobody will take a step back

2018-11-09 18:37:04 UTC

and we are very close to fighting with batteries

2018-11-09 18:37:45 UTC

We do fight with batteries. At least parts of batteries. Thank you, lead.

2018-11-09 18:38:18 UTC

look at fighter planes for example all the modern planes are more focused on electronic warfare than anything else

2018-11-09 18:38:27 UTC

no we're not, because batteries don't have anywhere near the energy-density of explosives or gunpowder and can't theoretically do so either

2018-11-09 18:38:42 UTC

yes, electronic warfare, but not batteries and EMP

2018-11-09 18:39:06 UTC

hell, their batteries aren't even that big or noteworthy since batteries are extremely heavy for their energy content

2018-11-09 18:39:29 UTC

Implying fighter planes are relevant to modern theatres of war.

2018-11-09 18:39:30 UTC

so it's all alternator powered

2018-11-09 18:39:33 UTC

When was the last dog fight?

2018-11-09 18:39:52 UTC

thats why they are used in electronic warfare not shooting each other

2018-11-09 18:40:14 UTC

fighter planes arent build for dogfights anymore

2018-11-09 18:40:33 UTC

Then why do you call them fighter planes?

2018-11-09 18:40:57 UTC

is the f-22 a fighter plane?

2018-11-09 18:41:12 UTC

Dogfighting isn't the only way to kill enemy aircraft?

2018-11-09 18:41:19 UTC

thats a good point

2018-11-09 18:41:44 UTC

most fighter planes arent made for dogfighting nowadays
