I will have to say, I have seen countries celebrate failed revolutionaries before their country was able to gain independence, but it is strange seeing the Americans still have this much reverence for their own failed traitors.

It is not the recognition that is the strange part, there are many people who despise Hitler & the Nazis, but still acknowledge & greatly value people studying him & his regime in the greater culture. It is the loving veneration the Confederation still receives that is strange.

Personally, I find confederate statues not be to bad as long as they symbolize something other than slavery. A lot of men on the confederate side fought for reasons other than to keep slavery and surrendered honorably when they saw they were nearing defeat. The nazis had people who didn’t like the party but still fought out of things like duty to the country. Would I want a statue of a Wehrmacht soldier? Yes, as long as it is about the soldiers rather than the darkness of that part of history.

I think that people think of slavery from the wrong PoV in general. Times were hard and some viewed slavery as a chance to a better life. (which is what they got, specially after 3 generations in the US)

Slavery in Africa was (and is) completely different though

That is not really something you can compensate for to the people who want the confederate statues gone, it is like telling the holocaust survivors for every one statue commemorating the Nazi holocaust organizers that there are two for the holocaust memorials.

im from the south and have a appreciation for history, even the bad parts, as we must learn from it and remember it instead of trying to hide it away

take the French Revolution for example

the revolutionaries destroyed various statues and memorials that were even remotely religious or monarchical

the irony was that they ended up with an Emperor but they legit lost aspects of their history due to the destruction, and while not enough to erase aspects of their past entirely, it is knowledge that we will never have access to again

suffice to say its difficult for me to support the destruction or hiding/storing away of even the darker aspects of American history. Put them in a museum if anything, just dont erase it outright.
