I've always assumed it's about exhibitionism, like the creepy old men who open their trenchcoats to reveal they're naked underneath while on the subway or whatever
otherwise just participating in a protest seems a lot more productive
also on feminist parades and whatnot there are always women protesting for the right to go bare chested like men are allowed to
