I do believe it's kind of a dick move to scratch on your opponents' humanity. Comparable to calling someone not affiliated with nazis a nazi. It's a lie for other people to believe in, and, yeah, dick move covers the basics.
How to deal with that? I wonder if "Don't bring my great-uncle into this" is a response there I'd like to see played out...
