it's not because the types of planes that have the fuel range is limited
in an open theater, it's insufficient
they can circumnavigate planet with one or two refuels, they can stay aloft effectively forever, way more efficient than carrier based planes
and if you consider midair refuel, then protecting the refueling planes become a whole tactical issue altogether
modern day carrier wing is a bad imitation of an air force strike fighter wing
with less efficient and shorter legged aircraft
