I had a weird feeling he'd lose the runoff since it looked like the vote got split among the moderates.

What I find odd is that you'd have so many candidates but not some kind of moderated voting scheme to prevent vote splitting or something.
It's not a solution that usually works.

Before I moved away from California the Dem were actually afraid of infighting leading to GOP victories.
