A diocesan priest works in a church like you know, and is paid a (humble) salary, while a religious order priest belongs to the Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans, whatever, and do not get paid anything at all.

Professor priests, specifically.

Of course those priests will still go work at churches etc but they are not bound to a diocese and that isn't a permanent assignment.
